Old School Friday "The Jones Girls"

FRIDAY, FRIDAY, FRIDAY!!!!! And just EIGHT DAYS from Christmas! Tomorrow I will be posting Christmas songs daily but for now I have something else in mind. I love comparing older songs to their newer versions and I came across the Jones Girls song "Who Can I Run To" on YouTube and had to post it. Most 90's babies think that Xscape were the original singers of this song but alas they were not. Which version do you think is best?? (I personally ALWAYS prefer the originals!!)

Old School Friday "Happy Birthday Harry Elston"

Oh Friday, how I Love Thee...
Well here we are at another Friday and it is a bit cold here in Texas. I am refusing to turn on my heat because my electric company is absolutely HORRENDOUS (Just because you are"serving" green energy does not mean I should be paying the highest prices available)! So today I am buying wood for the fireplace so that my family does not freeze to death! Any way, I digress!
Cool weather means baking, cooking, and of course GOOD MUSIC! So of course me being an old school lover, I had to find something really good today to go with my fire in the fireplace! And I found it... Today is the 73 birthday of Harry Elston! Name not ringing a bell? How about if I say, today is the 73 birthday of Harry Elston, singer of The Friends of Distinction!! By the way, Harry Elston was born right here in Dallas, Texas! Oh yea, if you love old school music then I know you love Friends of Distinction! Old School Friday "Happy Birthday Telma Hopkins"

Another Friday means another week gone by. I am working on 2 final projects for my Organizational Psychology class, working on some ancestry.com stuff, as well as simultaneously writing two blog posts! So yea, I figured I would take a minute to enjoy some music. I was trolling the Internet and found out that today is Telma Hopkins birthday!
Most of you may know Telma Louise Hopkins from the television sitcom "Family Matters" or from the sitcom "Half & Half". But I first became aware of Ms. Hopkins when I was about 7 years old (1973) and she was 1/3 of the singing group Tony Orlando & Dawn! At the time, they had a hit song titled "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree". I knew the song well because when I was young I was a Fresh Air Fund child and spent most of my summers with a family in Ashland, Pennsylvania. The family had a daughter named Laura who was my age and Tony Orlando & Dawn was one of Laura's favorite groups!

So this Old School Friday is my ode to rural summers. Summers of sitting in front of Pop-pop's general store (Pop-pop was Laura's granddad!) eating ice cream, summers of running through fields of wild flowers, and summers of feeding the wild rabbits in the woods behind the Selinsky's home (my summer home!). and my Happy Birthday to Telma Hopkins!

Enjoy!

Old School Friday "RIP VESTA WILLIAMS"

Man oh man, what a week it has been. Full of highs and lows. I was going to skip Old School Friday today because I really did not feel like blogging today but then I saw on the Internet that VESTA WILLIAMS has died. Whoa. This woman had a BEAUTIFUL voice (not always the best writers but the voice was undeniable). This was one singer who was definitely Unsung, Under utilized, and Unappreciated. So of course I had to crank up YouTube and do Ms Vesta some justice for Old School Friday. To find out more about Vesta Williams go HERE and HERE. Old School Friday "Otis Redding"

HAPPY FRIDAY ALL!!!
Today is the birthday of none other than Mr. OTIS REDDING! Man, he belted out some smooth tunes! Some songs just NEVER get old and Ottis Redding was the singer of MANY OF THEM! Mr. Redding was born in Dawson, Georgia on September 9, 1941 and he died in tragic plane accident in Madison, Wisconsin on December 10, 1967. He was only 26 years old when he died. His song "Sitting On The Dock Of A Bay" was his last recorded song, and it game out in January 1968 (His only #1 hit). The song was actually unfinished because the whistling he did in the song was only a place holder for lyrics to be inserted later, but due to his death he never got the chance to finish it. I was 1 year old when Otis Redding died but I ABSOLUTELY love his music. I can only assume the love of Otis Redding came from my mother playing his music, but oddly enough my mom is not that big of an Otis fan. Hmmm, maybe my dad then??? Well, I do not know where my love of Otis Redding came from but it is in my bones!!
To learn more about Otis Redding (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967), go HERE and HERE!
So sit back and Enjoy!!!!

Old School Friday "Ohio Players"

It is Friday evening and I am now in relaxation mode! I did a little grocery shopping, put away laundry, went and picked up my grandson, and attended an Ethics Committee meeting today. I think I had a pretty productive day so I am now going to listen to some old school jams and do some homework (There is a maybe on that homework option!!)!
I recently caught some missed episodes of Unsung, man oh man I LOVE that show! Today I am posting some Ohio Players! Most of the songs are of a sexual nature and when they came out (around 1975) I was about 9 years old. At 9 I knew nothing at all about sex but these are some of my favorite songs, smh, go figure! Back in those days there was not much music choices, there was no rap/hip hop in 1975, (first commercial rap song was Rappers Delight, which came out in 1979) it was all funk, gospel, or R&B. So Old School Music is buried deep in my psyche and I was told I was born with an old soul! LOL! My mother was a music lover and I stayed going through her albums! To learn more about the Ohio Players go HERE and HERE. Anyway, ENJOY!!!

My favorite Ohio Players song...... Sugarfoot (the lead singer) is putting in work!
Heaven Must Be Like This - Ohio Players

This next song has some killer horns!
Skin Tight - Ohio Players

Sweet Sticky Thing - Ohio Players

You gotta LOVE the 70's!!!

Old School Friday Happy Father's Day Weekend!

FRIDAY, FRIDAY, FRIDAY!! There is a beautiful breeze out and it is Father's Day weekend! My dad, Samuel Thomas Spencer went on to be with the Lord in 1999. My maternal grandfather, Caldwell Marion Middleton went on to be with the Lord in 1980. My paternal grandfather, Rufus E. Spencer also went on to be with the Lord in 1980 (I was not close with my paternal grandfather, but to the best of my knowledge he passed on in 1980). I pray that all of these men are Resting In Peace and are communing with the Heavenly Father.

As I have posted numerous times on my blogs, when I think of my father, the sound track is always Gil Scott-Heron most notably "Your Daddy Loves You"! When grandaddy comes to mind I always think of the song "Jesus is Love" by the Commodores! Unfortunately I have no memories that are accompanied by music when it comes to my paternal grandfather because he was hospitalized for many years and I only remember him in a hospital bed.

Today I am going to highlight songs that I am attributing to my Father and Grandfather, songs that I like to think they would sit in a swing and listen to as they relax in a cool summer breeze.

Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding

Summer Breeze - The Isley Brothers

Still Waters Run Deep - The Four Tops

Summertime - Billie Holiday

To ALL the Fathers that are still with us Have an AWESOMELY BLESSED FATHER'S DAY! Remember YOU are the EXAMPLE of manliness in some boys life, act accordingly! For those who have already gone on I pray that you are resting with the Angels (Or doing the Cupid Shuffle with Jesus!)!!

Be Blessed All!!

Hug a Father Today!

Old School Friday "Traffic Jams"

Friday, Friday, Friday!! A LOVELY 70 Degrees outside, a little bit of change in my pocket and I am ready to RIDE!!!!
Today's Old School Friday theme is TRAFFIC JAMS!!
THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN SITTING IN A TRAFFIC JAM WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO GET SOMEWHERE... well maybe having to go to the bathroom but you are stuck in a traffic jam!
Anyway... Any time there is a traffic jam and I am sitting there 1 song always pops into my head but because of the year the song came out and because of the explicit content I will not post it here... BUT in case you are so inclined you can view it on youtube!!

#1 Traffic Jam song - Ludacris - Move BI%@H!!

This first song always reminds me of my paternal Grandmother, because she sang it all the time!! RIP Grandmother Spencer.

Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles

Low Rider - WAR

Happy Friday All!!!
