Old School Friday "Heatwave"

Happy Old School Friday everyone!
Thank God for the weekend! Theses weeks are getting longer and longer, so I need to get all I can out of my weekends! So let's kick it off with some good Old School Music!!

I recently watch Unsung *HEATWAVE*. Let me tell you there were things that I had no clue about in reference to the group Heatwave. If you are not watch UNSUNG on TVOne then you are certainly missing out. Unsung gives us the history of and the behind the scenes stuff on some of our favorite musical groups and personalities. The majority of the groups and singers highlighted by TVOne's Unsung are the ones that did not go as far or as high as we (the listening public) thought they should. The stories are often times sad or tragic, but very entrancing. I have missed quite a few of them because I very rarely watch TV and often forget what is coming on that I wanted to see. So I finally got smart and set the DVR (since I am paying ridiculous prices for the service!) so that when I am not bogged down with school work or Childcare obligations I can sit back, relax, and check it out. Check your local listings for TVOne's Unsung!

Okay, on to the music! HEATWAVE!!

Even though people say that "Always & Forever" was Heatwave's best ballad, My ALL TIME FAVORITE Heatwave ballad is "Mind Blowing Decisions"!

Mind Blowing Decisions - Heatwave

Boogie Nights - Heatwave

Girls - Heatwave

Always & Forever - Heatwave

{*side note* - The organ player Rod Temperton is an English songwriter who went on to write and compose songs for Rufus & Chaka Khan, Tamia, Quincey Jones, Donna Summer, Patti Austin and many, many more. But perhaps Temperton is most known for his work with Michael Jackson, most notably the "Off The Wall" & "Thriller" albums.}

Well, folks ... There you have it, HEATWAVE!!

Have a Fabulous weekend!

Happy Old School Friday Ladies and Gents!!!
Some songs are good but then you find out that the version you know is NOT the original and you are like WOW because the original is AWESOME!! Some originals are superior and it makes me wonder why we do not hear more of the original music... Don't get me wrong I like a good remake as much as the next person BUT I would LOVE to hear more original works OLD & NEW! Remakes are BIG business, and there are SOOOO MANY but I'll just highlight three.

Old School Friday "RIP MaLinda Sapp" (REPOST)

Friday is the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend and this crossover into weekend always signifies MUSIC for me!! This is usually an awesome time especially since I LOVE MUSIC! However today's Old School Friday post I am dedicating to Dr. MaLinda Sapp, a licensed psychologist, licensed professional counselor, college professor, as well as manager and wife of 18 years of gospel singer Marvin Sapp. Dr. MaLinda Sapp age 43 died on Thursday (9/9/10) due to complications of colon cancer. I send my sincere condolences and prayers up for the Sapp family. Dr, MaLinda leaves behind a husband, Marvin Sapp and three children, Marvin II (age 16), Mikaila (age 13), and Madisson (age 11).

Marvin Sapp's album "Thirsty" is his best selling solo project to date and gave us the hit song "Never Would Have Made It" and the album has also won Sapp 7 Gospel Stellar Awards. Though I absolutely LOVE the song "NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE IT" and I love the album "Thirsty", that is not my favorite Marvin Sapp song. My favorite from Marvin Sapp is his album "Diary of a Psalmist". If you have never heard the album "Diary of a Psalmist" I suggest you get it, play it, get your cry on, get your praise on and watch God MOVE!
I have lots of Sapp Favorites and below are a few of them all dedicated to DR. MALINDA SAPP ... RIP Dr. MaLinda Sapp, rest well, you will be missed ...

RIP Lena Horne, an Icon

Over this past weekend a LEGEND passed away. On Sunday 5/9/10, Lena Horn died at the age of 92. Born, Lena Mary Calhoun Horne on June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York she was an Entertainer, A Singer, a Dancer and an Activist in the Civil Rights Movement.

Ms Horne had parts in films such as "Stormy Weather", "Cabin In The Sky" and "The Wiz" as well as starring in her own Broadway show "Lena Horne: The Lady & Her Music".
Ms Horne was an Emmy Nominee and a Tony Award Nominee and she was the winner of an NAACP Award.

At a time in history when Black people were not aloud simple basic freedoms Ms Horne was helping to clear the way for black entertainers who would come after her.

Where Is Today's Musical Talent?

Listening to the radio is such a big disappointment! Most of the stuff you hear on "urban" stations is garbage! But then the stations that supposedly play the best in old and new R&B are peddling the same stuff over and over. There are so many artist from the past that I NEVER hear on the radio.
so I decided to take a minute and spotlight a few of the female artist who I think are VERY UNDERRATED in the music industry.

MELBA MOORE - Lean On Me

MINNIE RIPPERTON - Loving You

BRENDA HOLLOWAY - Every Little Bit Hurts

STEPHANIE MILLS - Never Knew Love Like This Before

PATRICE RUSHEN - Remind Me

VESTA - Congratulations

MIKI HOWARD - Live Under New Management

Wow!!! Can you believe this list?? And these women NEVER really got the Acclaim, Notoriety, Fame, or Respect that they deserved! A SIN & A SHAME!!!

The list can go on for days! Where is the talent of today's generation? There is nothing out there on this level! People we are in a sad, sad, state of affairs when it comes to music!
What do you think?

Stormy Weather & Trouble Man's Marvin Gaye

Happy Friday All!
It is a rainy and dreary day here in Texas. The weather mirrors my mood musically today. My music mood is dark and stormy today. Today is the birthday of one my favorite musical artist, Mr. Marvin Gay"e" (He added the "e" to his name in his teen years). Being a lover of Old School Music means not just loving the music but understanding the artists of those times. For the black community the 60's & 70's were troubling times politically, racially and economically but one of the few places where black people excelled was musically. The 60's & 70's brought forth some of the BEST musical artists and hits of not only that time but for ALL time.
Marvin Gaye was one of those UNFORGETTABLE artists. He was an African - American singer, songwriter with a 3 octave vocal range! Unfortunately Marvin Gaye Jr was fatally shot by his father Marvin Gay Sr on April 1, 1984, one day before his 45th Birthday. Marvin had a voice that oozed sexuality and sensuality as evident in musical hits like "Come Get To This" & "Lets Get It On". He also lent his voice to the ongoing struggle of black people of that era as evident in hits like "Mercy, Mercy Me" & "Inner City Blues". But his voice was also an outlet that was more personal. Music was his escape from a troubling, hurtful and hateful life as evident in hits like "If I Should Die Tonight", "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" & "Here My Dear". Marvin Gaye was a product of child abuse, Religious Zealousness, and hatred from his father.
According to trutv.com:
"Living with father was something like living with a king, a very peculiar, changeable, cruel and all-powerful king," Marvin Gaye told biographer Ritz. "You were supposed to tip-toe around his moods. You were supposed to do anything to win his favor. I never did. Even though winning his love was the ultimate goal of my childhood, I defied him. I hated his attitude... If it wasn't for mother, who was always there to console me and praise my singing, I think I would have been one of those child suicides you read about in the papers."
Marvin Gaye had the love of his mother but his father and he had a terrible, volatile and hateful relationship.
According to Alberta Gay (mother of Marvin jr.) & Jeanne Gay (sister of Marvin jr) (via trutv.com):
Alberta Gay said, "My husband never wanted Marvin, and he never liked him. He used to say that he didn't think he was really his child. I told him that was nonsense. He knew Marvin was his. But for some reason he didn't love Marvin and, what worse, he didn't want me to love Marvin either. Marvin wasn't very old before he understood that."

Jeanne Gay said, "From the time he was 7 until he became a teenager, Marvin's life at home consisted of a series of brutal whippings."

His personal demons were further metastasized by drug addiction, porn addiction and paranoia. This formed Marvin Gaye into the troubled soul that we knew and loved. I just finished reading "the Life and Tragic Death of Motown's Marvin Gaye" on trutv.com. I had read most of this story before but it was still a very interesting read. Marvin Gaye is on my phone, mp3 and computer play-list and nothing that I read about his personal life and trials will change that. He would have been 71 years old today had he lived. He was indeed a very troubled soul, a prolific and very talented artist. He is sorely missed...

Rest In Peace, Marvin Pentz Gay Jr (Marvin Gaye) April 2, 1939 - April 1, 1984

Old School Friday #96 ~Ron Banks & The Dramatics~

Happy Friday Everyone! Welcome to Regina's Old School Friday Spot! The music was taking over my other blog so I felt it was only fitting that Old School Friday get it's own place!!
I did some running around today and am late posting but when I got back home I heard the disturbing news that Ronald Dean Banks the founding member of the 70's hit group "The Dramatics" died of a heart attack. He was 58 at the time of his death and was said to be in good health. Very sad and tragic...
So for me Today's theme is "Ron Banks & The Dramatics"
I do not often deviate from the chosen theme but today I think it is only fitting that I honor Ron Banks and the Dramatics for Old School Friday. Rest In Peace Ron Banks...Ronald Dean Banks - 1951-2010
